“My Nana and aunties used to make this when I was young”

This delicious baked custard, inspired by the Amish, is incredibly simple to make with a few basic ingredients. Its smooth, creamy texture makes it ideal for any occasion.

Ingredients:

  • 14 oz sweetened condensed milk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups hot water
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons ground nutmeg (for garnish, if desired)

Instructions:

1. Preheat and Prepare (10 minutes):

Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C). Prepare a 2-quart baking dish or individual ramekins by greasing them lightly with non-stick spray.

2. Whisk the Custard (5 minutes):

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sweetened condensed milk, salt, hot water, and vanilla extract. Whisk until the mixture is smooth and well blended.

3. Pour and Bake (45-60 minutes):

Pour the custard mixture into the prepared baking dish or divide evenly among the ramekins. Place the dish or ramekins inside a larger baking pan. Carefully fill the larger pan with boiling water, ensuring it reaches about halfway up the sides of the custard dish or ramekins.

Bake for 45-60 minutes, or until the custard is set. A knife inserted in the center should come out clean, but the custard should still have a slight jiggle in the middle.

4. Cool and Garnish (2 hours):

After baking, carefully remove the dish or ramekins from the water bath. Let the custard cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.

For an extra touch, dust the top with powdered nutmeg before serving.

Enjoy this Amish-inspired custard, perfect for any gathering!
