The trust I had in both of them was shattered in that instant. What was supposed to be a simple birthday gift turned into a nightmare. What was Linda trying to prove? What was Mike’s part in all this? And where do we go from here?

Following that shocking discovery with the shampoo and shower gel, I knew I had to confront Linda directly. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. When I showed her the message and asked her outright what she meant by it, the chill in her response froze me to the core.
Linda looked me straight in the eyes and said, “It was a test, Anna. I needed to know if you were strong enough, resilient enough for our family. Marriage isn’t just about comfort, it’s about overcoming challenges. I wanted to see how you’d handle a real problem.”

I was speechless. The idea that causing me distress was some sort of twisted test was horrifying. This wasn’t just a mother-in-law being overbearing; this was something else, something much darker. Her words made it clear that she had a very warped view of what it means to be a wife in her family.

After that confrontation, the atmosphere at home was tense. Mike was torn, visibly upset by his mother’s actions and her justification, but also struggling with loyalty towards her. We had many long, difficult conversations about what had happened. He was shocked and in disbelief at first but began to see how deeply his mother’s actions had hurt me.
