“I’m Claire,” she answered. “I apologize for the confusion. It must be my former partner, Roger. He retains a key to my apartment.”
My astonishment was palpable. “What? Why does he possess a key?”
“Our relationship concluded because he revealed his true, unpleasant nature,” she elaborated. “He never returned the key, and I neglected to contact him again, assuming it was resolved.”
“But why would he be presenting your apartment?” I continued, trying to comprehend the scenario.
“Roger is aware of my schedule,” she explained, looking downward. “While I’m employed, he masquerades as a real estate agent and conducts tours of my apartment. He deceives couples into paying a security deposit, then vanishes. Since I maintain my residence orderly, it appears unoccupied. I only recently became aware.”
“He utilizes your apartment to defraud individuals?”
Claire nodded, her eyes brimming with tears. “Yes. I was oblivious to his actions.”
“We should inform the police,” I proposed. “Roger must be halted, Claire.”
Claire appeared fearful. “I’m uncertain if I can confront him. I’m genuinely frightened of him.”
I placed a hand on her shoulder. “You need not face him solo. I’ll support you. We can manage this together.”
Claire eventually consented, and we devised a strategy.
The following day, Claire took a break from work, and I was there to support her. We anxiously waited, hoping our plan would be effective. Around midday, we heard the lock turning. Roger entered with another couple, intending to conduct another fraudulent tour.
His face paled when he saw us waiting inside. “Claire, I… I can explain,” he stammered, realizing he was caught.
Claire steadied herself, her voice firm yet shaky. “What are you doing in my apartment, Roger?” she demanded. “You’ve been pretending it’s for rent, right? Now, return my key immediately!”
The couple, sensing the tension and confusion, quickly exited, discussing quietly among themselves.
Roger tried to justify his actions weakly. “Claire, it was just a way to make some quick money.”
Her anger was visible, but her voice shook as she responded, “I want the key back now, and any copies you’ve made, or I’m calling the police!”
Roger’s defiance melted away as he realized his position. “Fine,” he muttered, handing over the key. “Just leave me out of your life.”
Claire accepted the key with a stern look. “If I find out you’ve kept any copies, you’ll regret it.”
As Roger left, I turned to Claire. “You handled that incredibly well.”
She smiled, a weight lifted from her shoulders. “Thanks, Jack. I couldn’t have done this without your help.”
After a moment, I ventured, “So, how about going out for a coffee sometime? I promise, the only thing I’d ever take from you is a moment to enjoy your company.”
Claire laughed, her first genuine smile in what must have been a long time. “That sounds lovely, Jack. Thank you for everything.”
We ended up going to a local café a few days later. During our coffee date, I mentioned the nightly waving. “You know, with the harsh light behind you, it did look a bit eerie.”
Claire’s eyes widened in mock horror. “Oh no! I had my laptop there because I work late. I didn’t realize how it looked. And here I was, just trying to be friendly because I thought you were quite charming.”
I showed her a picture I had snapped one evening. Claire gasped, covering her mouth. “That does look creepy! I can’t believe you were brave enough to confront what you thought might be a ghost!”
Laughing, I replied, “Well, if you were a ghost, I’d still invite you out for coffee.”
Our laughter filled the café, and it felt like the beginning of something new and wonderful.
Claire beamed. “It all turned out for the best. Here’s to new beginnings, Jack.”
