How To Get Rid of Nighttime Leg Cramps: Simple Solutions That Actually Work

Simple Remedies to Alleviate Nighttime Leg Cramps

Leg cramps, especially at night, may be a genuine misery. They may not be harmful, but they certainly hurt and make us want to just get rid of them. Distinct from restless leg syndrome (RLS), these cramps are involuntary spasms that impact the upper leg, calf, and foot. Unlike RLS, these cramps are excruciating and may briefly immobilize the legs upon impact, lasting anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes.

Although research into what causes leg cramps at night is ongoing, a lack of exercise and certain nutrients are suspected culprits. Luckily, there are methods to alleviate these pains when they happen. If you often suffer from leg cramps while sleeping, you can find relief by trying one of these easy solutions:

1. Get Moving

Leg cramps are more likely to occur after extended durations of sitting or standing. If you want to avoid this, make it a point to be more active and move about more often. Reducing the frequency of these cramps may be as simple as taking brief walks or indulging in mild exercise.

2. Actively Stretch

If you get leg cramps in the middle of the night, you could find relief by stretching the muscle that is causing the cramp. To alleviate the pain and prevent the cramp from returning, try gently tugging or rubbing the affected muscle.

3. Drink Plenty of Water

In addition to being good for your health in general, staying hydrated may help you avoid painful muscular cramps. Stay hydrated all day long by drinking water often, even if you don’t think you need it. Lessen the likelihood of leg cramps throughout the night by keeping yourself hydrated.
